Flies for northern waters

10 all-round flies for Trout, Arctic Char and Grayling

For us the waters of Lapland are about all the best things in fly fishing: big country, wide open spaces, gin-clear waters, and trophy sized fish willing

to take small flies. Here are our top 10 flies for northern waters. A set without which we would simply not feel comfortable going.

Yellow Superpuppan

By far the most trusted dry in our boxes for years. Almost always on the rig as the end fly. Works floating free, on drag or even when wet just under the surface film. The pattern is Swedish in origin, but we would not go anywhere without it. Sometimes a red headed version stimulates the more passive fish into striking.

Tan Elk Hair Caddis

Jani's all time favourite dry fly. Although a caddis fly, works also as an allround terrestrial imitation when tied on a larger hook. It's bushy hackle and elk hair wing help to keep it floating even in the rougher waters. Almost always fished in tandem with a Superpuppan on the end.

Streaking Caddis

With it's faster tying time this has become Jussi's preferred alternative to the Elk Hair Caddis. It's usually fished as a top fly with the Superpuppan being on the end. With it's buoyant muddler head, works even as an indicator when nymphing.

The Brown Leech

Our never ending discussion about this fly's imitative qualities: Injured char? stonefly? worm or what? What ever - It's for those situations when the usual 'gentle' methods don't work. Jerky, bouncing retrieve for best effect - Often causing a really aggressive take from bigger char and trout.

Black Head Green Tag

For us, a more effective variation of the original Red Tag. Trout, char and grayling all go for this. Both fibre and hackle barb tail variations work - but never with a gold head.

Black Klinkhåmer

Probably the best all round dry fly for grayling and arctic char. Works particularly well tied on a small hook. Fished in overcast conditions and when there's an abundance of mosquito and gnat in the air.

Black Goldhead Nymph

The saviour of many difficult fishing days. Almost always on our rig when the waters seem dead and nothing works. There's something about the small size and oversized bead that the fish seem to find irresistible.

Jani's big stonefly pattern for the shy deep swimming arctic char. Works best when free swimming as the end fly on a fast sinking leader.
